If Ullrich would not have been sick in the Alpes he would have won that Tour. It certainly was his strongest year.

EPO, blood doping, HGH, testosterone, IGF-1…

Incredible watching these guys practically sprint up one of the toughest climbs in the world, with 180km of hard racing.

I miss the days of no helmets though, at least up the final climb. The rest of the course I can see why they are mandatory.

The Drugs and pre EPO tests and no helmets

randy19382 September 6, 2010 at 3:17 pm

It was the no helmets and drugs, pre EPO testing days. Those were the days.

@woodstock321 Yeah it is unfortunate that those riders are no longer racing or at the same level with a ban from the sport… It would make it much more exciting if they were still nearly.

woodstock321 September 6, 2010 at 5:18 pm

I reckon it were the riders which made it much more exciting these days! Ullrich, Beloki, Hamilton. They were stars. And now there aren’t any riders of such a charisma left…

bustedbojangles September 6, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Now and again I reckon to myself that the drugs made it more exciting.

@riptorian Yep, 2001 Alpe D’huez when Telekom had its riders on the front all day. We also know that day as “The Look” which turned out to be untrue.

tugaorgulhoso September 6, 2010 at 8:36 pm

look at the us postal train… DAMN! how could someone beat that?!

rbonilla18 September 6, 2010 at 8:42 pm

riptorian September 6, 2010 at 8:54 pm

rbonilla18 September 6, 2010 at 9:09 pm

@benissimo86 even though im ullrich fan, i dont reckon i would have topic ullrich austerely couldnt match armtrong on climbs

rbonilla18 September 6, 2010 at 9:51 pm

@riptorian this is not the one where he said that. Thats the stage where heras, beloki and armstrong got to the end line together.

mattchow September 6, 2010 at 10:44 pm

Tohya66 September 6, 2010 at 11:07 pm

riptorian September 7, 2010 at 12:44 am

In a interview for the Versus hosts of Tour De France, Lance stated that over the telephone system he was saying “Slow” to Heras who pulled him and he heard it as “Goo”. He also stated it to be his worst time on a bike ever.
