Keirin Carnage at Lehigh Valley Velodrome

USA Cycling hands down suspensions for bad conduct By Mark Zalewski The Morning Call of Allentown, PA reported on Wednesday that Andy Lakatosh, Marty Nothstein and Leigh Barczewski have been suspended by USA Cycling resulting from a June 10 incident during a keirin race at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome. Lakatosh reportedly grabbed Jame Carney’s handlebars, causing Carney to crash following the final race of the KidsPeace Bicycle Racing League Finals. It was observed that Lakatosh’s actions were retaliation for earlier actions by Carney that caused another rider, Ben Barczewski (Leigh’s son), to crash. At the time, race officials disqualified Carney and Lakatosh from the event. However, Carney filed grievances with USA Cycling against the four race officials, as well as against Ben Barczewski, his father/coach Leigh Barczewski, Marty Nothstein and Mike Grabowski. The officials, along with Nothstein, were charged with collusion for disqualifying Carney because of the crash. Nothstein serves as the velodrome’s COO and Director of Cycling Operations. The charges against the officiating crew and Grabowski were eventually dismissed. USA Cycling CEO Gerard Bisceglia told the Morning Call that Lakatosh’s suspension is until January 2006 and that Ben Barczewski was issued a reprimand for a verbal confrontation with Carney. Nothstein received a two-month suspension, beginning in September, for violating USA Cycling’s Code of Conduct. “It was probably the strangest hearing we’ve ever

My only guess is that she races and she was just putting some bike shorts on. But, yeah it looked like she was whipping up her drawers after a shag under the bleachers.

I was so happy for Marty when he won that gold in 2000 cuz I grew up on railroad st in trexlertown and he was my hometown Olympian. I never thought he would be involved in an incident like this

No, they may last for many rounds. Races with teams where they race while chaning between teammates, the teammates who aint racing will just be riding the course in slower pace to recharge. And it will go in laps.

iwuvpanda July 30, 2010 at 5:07 am

is it typical for these races to last only a few minutes?

arklat July 30, 2010 at 5:25 am

Dear janey. I read my comment again. Maybe u should. I don’t see where I “condone” anything. I have raced at T-Town. I was a team mate w/ Pat McD. And G. Hatton. I’ve raced @ Hellyer,Alpenrose, San Diego, Dom Hills, and a temp plywood track @ Madison SQ Gardens for a 4 day. Just about every velo in the US. All I said was it gets very tense. I only raced track for three years, but was pretty adequate, but by no means a star rider, like you. My specialty was mass starts, like madisons and devils

janeyegerton July 30, 2010 at 5:36 am

@arklat: I don’t know where you’ve been racing track, but where I come from that kind of behaviour has never arisen. It’s most shameful of you to condone such an attack.

PS: I spent many years of my life on the track so I know what I’m talking about.

I noticed that too!!!lol

arklat July 30, 2010 at 7:25 am

If you’ve raced track as much as I have, you would know that tempers run high, and fights, intentional crashes, hooking, and childish behavior, happen quite often. There is more drama than the road, and spectators get to see how rough bicycle racing can be at times. Keirins and miss-and-outs are especially vicious. Also, rivalries develop between riders who have several incidences over time.

Track cyclists are the hockey players of the cycling world… well I guess MTBers have the armor, but they don’t race cutthroat like this.
